Sorry, I haven't heard back from you since November 2015, and it is now
approaching to the end of 2016. ;-)
Can you still reproduce this bug running Frescobaldi 2.18.1+ds1-3 on
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (xenial) or the upcoming Ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety)?

I did try a memtest86 with nothing unusual. To the best of my knowledge
my system is not overclocked. So I tried installing Debian instead of
Ubuntu (partitioning the drive between the two of them). Since running

It sounds like you may have hardware problems, like a flaky RAM chip or
hardware timing bugs, that are killing the X11 server. Have you tried running a
RAM test such as "memtest86"? Is your computer overclocked?
