It took me some time to find correlation with power supply, but now that
I know it, I can plug in power supply when using cable ethernet.
I try to be a good citizen and report my problems. I found it hard to
report a regression in ubuntu

regression was introduced in an audio commit specific to the device:

I've been seeing the same problem with my main test desktop and the 3.8
kernels.
Many times I could just reboot a few times and the connection would come
up. But as of this morning I can't get the interface to come up in my
desktop machine without using Francois's hack (thanks for that, BTW).
