may be the left and right of your internal Mic are in inverted phase
try alsamixer -c0 to mute the right channel of the capture switch

I am confused. I used alsamixer to play with the settings for the
Capture item. Setting it to L 0 R 100 or L 100 R 0 gave me clearish
but quiet sound. I have now set it to L 100 R 100 and the sound is still
