I don't care so much about Nouveau as I do the Nvidia official drivers. I
never had many problems if at all stability-wise with Nouveau, but I like
the official Nvidia drivers better regardless because they are built
specifically for and by Nvidia for Nvidia products, allowing a more

The suggested solution ( sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331 andsudo
dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331-uvm ) stopped the Unity launcher and top
status bar from displaying, and hotkeys (such as CTRL-ALT-T ) wouldn't

This is not fixed with nvidia-340. I have Xubuntu 14.04 with nvidia-340
and nvidia-304-uvm installed from the xorg-edgers PPA. It seems nvidia-
libopencl1-340 depends on nvidia-340-uvm. I just installed the 3.19.3
vivid kernel from here:

I'm running Ubuntu Vivid. Today, when updating kernel from 3.19.0-9 to
3.19.0-10, DKMS went on without throwing any errors. I suppose it is
because nvidia-3xx and nvidia-3xx-uvm packages have been merged. I'm on
nvidia-346 (346.47-0ubuntu4)
Now I no longer need to reconfigure or reinstall the nvid

This has worked for me, HP portable.
for the first time the proposed solutions did not come back with file
not found etc:
It seems to be a clean installation.
If any one needs more details contact me but tell me how to pass the
information.
thank you for your cooperation, we are not all techies
For my Ubuntu 14.10, I use this command after an update of the kernel:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331 nvidia-331-uvm --reinstall
