Using Gnome-Shell 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.10, I can confirm that removing appmenu-qt5 is the only way to get the vlc tray icon to show. You can confirm the problem by attempting to start vlc in the tray: vlc --qt-start-minimized With appmenu-qt5 installed, the following error is generated, and the
