Same problem here with Thinkpad T43 and up-to-date Gutsy.

I have an IBM X31 with the same problem.
With Feisty it worked perfectly.
In /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness I can read the correct level of brightness.

I have an IBM T23 with the same problem. I don't know about Feisty (I
never used it because of other problems), but it was working in Gutsy a
few days ago. There were some updates, and now it doesn't seem to be
working. The indicator pops up, but the indicator just stays all the
way at the
Same problem here with Sony SZ3XWP, nvidia card, Fn keys work fine to
manually dim the monitor but the applet doesn't work, neither does the
automatic dimming when I unplugged the laptop. When I do so, I can see
the brightness applet appear momentarily ont he screen but the screen
isn't dimmed.
