Hmm, looks like I've been able to solve it. I removed the .asoundrc and
.asoundrc.asoundconf and then ran
asoundconf set-default-card ICH5
Then everything works fine. But I still don't know what caused this
problem in the first place, and why it didn't work automatically. So
maybe this is not to

The bug persists still in Ubuntu 7.10.
The output from my litte player application is now this:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:769:(parse_card) cannot find card '�'
ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib
I've also made a simple c program to test. I copied exactly the code from
example 3 in
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6735
This is the error message i get when running as non-root (it is very similar to
the one from alsaplayer):
ALSA lib confmisc.c:670:(snd_func_card_driver) cannot find
