Did you have the possibility to test this? Because the bug didn't get
any comment during a long period and because it is partially about
programs that are not in ubuntu repositories, I set the status to
invalid but please feel free to re-open this bug report if you can
reproduce it with ubuntu
You can install lightning-extension package on Linux Ubuntu Gutsy, the
latest stable ubuntu release.
Since you don't use thunderbird from official ubuntu repositories, we
can't confirm this bug in mozilla-thunderbird unless if you can
reproduce this problem with thunderbird from ubuntu
Thanks for taking time to make ubuntu better.
Can you confirm if this bug still happens if you uninstall lightning
extension? We have see this problem with the xpi from
addons.mozilla.org, but not with the lightning-extension from ubuntu
repositories.

Note : Can you also test the lightning-extension from ubuntu repository
and tell me if you still have this problem?
You can install the lightning-extension by typing this on a terminal :
sudo apt-get install lightning-extension

After the weekend I run Thunderbird again, and now it crashes just at
the start. I have some internet connectivity issues right now, and when
I cannot connect to the internet it runs for a while, but then crashes
(segmentation fault).

Segmentation fault when I try to change size of Lighting pane in Thunderbird -
/usr/lib/thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 17331 Segmentation fault (core
dumped) $prog ${1+$@}
After trying to submit this bug, it started to work.
I cannot reproduce this error any more.
I hope that some talkback crash information was attached to this automatically,
because I clicked Help - Report a bug in Thunderbird
