The URI must be something using the "hp" CUPS backend, either
hp:/usb/... or hp:/net/ I have
hp:/usb/Deskjet_2640_series?serial=BR52AFC2TR0601
hp:/net/Deskjet_2540_series?zc=HP5CB901E7DDC7
but my printers do not need the plugin.

Tristram, you can find out which version of hplip you have installed by
entering dpkg -s hplip | grep Version (without quotes) in a terminal.
Meanwhile, someone else is experiencing the same symptoms with Ubuntu 14.04.

which is part of Ubuntu 15.04 or did you install an HPLIP directly from
HP's site (3.15.4)? I ask because you get
