I uninstalled my non-free drivers and went with the free ones too and
the effects are working now too. Hurray for consistency! ;-) I see this
as a work around. The real problem lies some place else and hopefully
someone will be able to track it down. For now I'm happy to use it as it
is and see ho
After reverting to the free drivers, the effects work fine here, till
now I had no crash the way I experienced them in feisty. All updates
applied.

I have a D610 and it is behaving the same. I upgraded from Feisty to
Gutsy and I cannot get the effects to work and it says the same thing
"The Composite extension is not available". Also, like others, under
Feisty, when I did get them to run it would lock up randomly. Maybe if
more people were to
I installed Gutsy and the effects work well without the ATI's
proprietary drivers, but the system randomly crashes and now all I get
is a kernel panic because it can't even mount the root partition.
