Resolved by downgrading. Version 2.6.22-14.38 results in a kernel Oops. Please don't ignore this as RESOLVED but investigate the cause in linux- ubuntu-modules since it completely freezes any application where a `kill -9 #` won't do anything. sudo apt-get install
