Same problem, same solution, also on an SMP x86_64. I had aplay,
alsactl, and also gnome-settings-daemon in uninterruptible sleep
state.

Resolved by downgrading. Version 2.6.22-14.38 results in a kernel Oops.
Please don't ignore this as RESOLVED but investigate the cause in linux-
ubuntu-modules since it completely freezes any application where a `kill
-9 #` won't do anything.
