I've got exactly the same pb on a fresh install of Hardy.
processor : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
Ram : 3Gb
Swap : 2gb
Linux 2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP Wed May 28 19:28:38 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
What more info do you need ?

Timo: Thanks for your response. This is a work computer so I don't think
installing Alpha-quality Hardy is a reasonable solution. I will try to

You should try Hardy, it could have been a bug somewhere else and fixed
in Hardy. Could you attach your Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf in any case.
