Firefox is not responding to any URL clicked or double-clicked from
outside itself. I've verified that against Thunderbird, Pidgin, gnome-
terminal, and a couple of others. This is on Hardy.

OK, you can change this from Thunderbird to the updates-manager, or
maybe its in the package setup. Either way, what happened during the
install was that my Preferred Applications / Web Browser got set to

Are you sure that prior to thunderbird's installation, preferred web
browser setting was set to Firefox? Did thunderbird change it from
FIrefox to 'Custom'? If so, give your ubuntu release and thunderbird

No, it was not the install of Thunderbird. That was already on the
system and up-to-date. It was the dist-upgrade of Firefox 2 to Firefox
3 Beta 3 that started the problem, so the package should be left as
