In the intervening time, the problem has been fixed, on Ubuntu Hardy
amd64 and i386, at least for my system. Another user discovered that at
boot, module ssb and the wireless module loaded in incorrect order. He
posted an init script that forced module load in the correct order. That

computer is Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with Broadcom 1390 wireless.
My WiFi router is a linksys device (unknown model) with fair signal. I
believe that I am the only user, although someone else could connect.
There is no password.
