To correct the problem, on ubuntu, install package imagemagick :
apt://imagemagick
Then, execute :
for i in /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/22/*.png; do file $i | grep -q '24 x
24' && sudo mogrify -crop 22x22+1+1 $i; done
It will crop 1 pixel on top,left,bottom,right to get 22x22 images
instead o
This problem happens in Pidgin 2.5.0 updated yesterday in Ubuntu 8.04
repositories.

This appears to be fixed with the latest Pidgin 2.4.0 package. It might
just be coincidence that it didn't occur based on the startup sequence
so I will continue to monitor it. However, the problem was pretty
consistent before this upgrade and it hasn't resurfaced since.
