As far as I can see, the bug is not occuring in Intrepid, i.e. the
Ubuntu fglrx driver package is working like it should (and Compiz is now
working well). I've tested it with 2 laptops using ATI cards.
However, I would be cautious before closing this bug report, since Hardy
is supposed to have
[This is an automated message]
As of Intrepid (8.10), we have a dedicated package 'fglrx-installer' for
fglrx bugs, which now includes a process for upstreaming bugs to AMD.

To transition your bug into the new fglrx-package, we need
Hi marco-laverdiere,
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with

I'm not westurner, but I'm having the same problem - ATI graphics,
'Lattice' hangs (BRS-time). 8.04.
Here's a 'tail' of my /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common if it
will help...
# on boot. The following example shows a (condensed) list of all

Alberto Milone: this did not work. fglrx simply does not load. I'm
reverting back to my startup script as I don't know another way to
initialize fglrx.
I'm using upgraded version of hardy (kernel 2.6.24-19 now)
I've built the drivers from ATI's installer (catalyst 8.06-june)
It's installed here
I have never used the -envy packages. I ALWAYS build packages using the
ATI installer, which uses dkms. I'm using most recent 8.6 catalyst now.
I will remove the script, and try depmod -ae as I usually depmod -a,
then modprobe.
if this works, i won't post again, but thanks! otherwise I will
westurner: can you attach your /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-

Same problem here. I'm not sure how to edit init.d but it's necessary so
that I don't have to manually insmod every login. Especially with
compiz. I have to blindly alt+F2, type xterm, metacity --replace
everytime.
Hopefully adding fglrx to /etc/modules will work...

Hardy: fglrx not working
Adding module to /etc/modules does not work for me.
Following the prescription here
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide#A_possible_problem_with_fglrx.ko_conflicts
does not work for me.
I made my own script simply by insmodding the fglrx.ko at boot.
sudo gedit
westurner: this is not the right bugreport since you have used the
-envy packages.
Type:
sudo depmod -ae
sudo modprobe fglrx
and you shouldn't need the script with insmod any more.

You received this bug
Same problem after updating to Hoary (kernel module fglrx was not loaded).
The installed package xserver-xgl seems to be source of the problem.
I solved this problem with following actions:
1) remove all packages / files related to fglrx
2) remove package xserver-xgl
3) install :
Also happening in here.. No module being loaded.. It used to just work

Confirmed here as well. The fglrx kernel driver doesn't want to load
unless manually insmodded:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile$ ls
ath_hal.ko fcdsl.kofcdslslusb.ko fcdslusba.ko fcpci.ko fglrx.ko
fxusb.ko nvidia_legacy.ko
fcdsl2.ko fcdslsl.ko
Having same problem; kernel module is missing.
Attempted automatic install using ati-driver-
installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run. Appears to work, but the log file shows
that the kernel module build failed:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ati-8-4# cat /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log
[Message] Kernel Module :
The problem was due to a leftover grub configuration causing kernel
2.6.22-14 to load instead of 2.6.24-16.
The generated xorg-driver-fglrx package will not install:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ati-8-4# dpkg -i
xorg-driver-fglrx-dev_8.476-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
Selecting previously deselected package
I did some other experimentations and now, I have a fully functional
fglrx driver.
Here's what fxglrxinfo reports now:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 Release
I'll explain what I did and what
Here's the requested files, with some explanations:
xorg.conf
It appears messy he! In fact, it's the result of X not wanting to load
properly (i.e. not leading me to the GDM login screen), and asking me to choose
another video card/screen configuration. That explains the result of a

Now, some interesting developments: this morning, I've decided to try
again the latest fglrx driver, as provided by AMD/ATI (i.e. version
April 16, 2008, released on April 16), after having completely removed
the fglrx driver provided by Ubuntu repos. After installation/reboot,
the result was

Well, it seems that after the latest Hardy update, something finaly
happens if I try to activate fglrx with the Ubuntu driver manager and
reboot, , i.e. X seems to try to use fglrx, fails and ask me to
configure my video card and screen. If I still select fglrx, then the
