hey sorry for the delay, i was pounding away and my brain and forums
yesterday so i eventually went to sleep!
ok so good news and bad news
I reinstalled the whole system and left the nvidia-glx-new package alone, and I
installed the beta driver from NVIDIA:
Are you testing with a NVidia Geforce FX5500 ?
If you test that on 32-bit Ubuntu8, I'll be waiting your results.
I'm requesting help in the NVIDIA's forum about their driver for this, but they
no longer respond:

Yes I have the same problem here as I'm trying to get the beta drivers
installed from NVIDIA for my 9600GT.
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new --remove simply returns that it
is the latest package and will not be removed.
I did try to use EnvyNG to uninstall the NVIDIA driver which it said was
