Title:
Plug in USB Drive - Does not
A reinstall of hal and a reboot worked for me.
The syslog gave me this:
(...)

[ 161.090139] sdd:

I'm having similar problems, running Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1. I've
installed usbmount, and now my USB memory sticks automount just fine --
except that I don't get any notifications. Systems settings /
Notifications / Storage Media Notifications shows the expected triplet
of Open in New
I get a dialog box now (after lots of updates lately):
Error
The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOM[E_MultiLoadApplet.
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

Attached is the hal.log.

the log indicates an hal or linux issue, could you get an hal debug log
as described on the wiki instructions?

Just to throw another wrench into the pile, a generic MicroSD USB reader
with SanDisk 2GB MicroSD does automount just fine in the same laptop and
a desktop.
[ 2668.560786] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
[ 2668.721530] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
I can confirm this. Not even a mount point is created. It also applies
to cdrom and dvds in my case.
