I am using ubuntustudio8.10 and have been missing the font viewer from
previous versions of ubuntu.
After reading the above I copied gnome-font-viewer and gnome-thumbnail-
font to my /usr/bin directory (as root using sudo in a terminal). Then,
by right clicking on a font file and using Properties
Regarding the above, I copied gnome-font-viewer and gnome-thumbnail-font
from /usr/bin on my version of Hardy I still have on another partition.
The font viewer is now working in Intrepid.

Excellent workaround!! just to add that we have to download the
gnome-control-center package from hardy-updates and extract it in a folder,
from there, copy the gnome-font-viewer in /usr/bin.
Would some maintainer help to intrepid users? since its possible to make it
work in

Sebastian, I beg your pardon, but this bug is still present in Jaunty.
Steps to recreate this bug:
1. Go to System/Preferences/Main Menu
2. Choose: Menus/Applications/Other/Font Viewer and mark it.
3. Try to launch Font Viewer from Applications/Other/Font viewer - IT DOESN'T
LAUNCH.

I am sorry to ask a stupid question, but how is that?
You say thumbnails and the simple viewer are gone for intrepid.
Does it mean that these features will only be available to users who upgrade to
Jaunty, and will never be available in Intrepid? And if so, what are the
reasons for
But how can we view fonts in intrepid? this bug has the Fix released
status, but not in intrepid which is the stable current version

I say there is no hope of seeing this resolved in Intrepid and should be
marked Fix Released for a specific target. I recommend using
Fontmatrix as a manager (it is really the best manager out there) but
thumbnails and the simple viewer are gone for intrepid.

This has also been brought to my attention by many Ubuntu Studio users
who do graphic work.
If it's still in GNOME trunk, what happened to that packaged version?

even in trunk. Maybe the application was deprecated by some debain
maintainer?

that's not an ubuntu bug
I beg to disagree. Ubuntu used to provide a functionality that is now
removed. If upstream introduces a bug, the ubuntu project shoudl try to
fix it, either by fixiing upstream, or in this case, by providing an
application that provides the same functionality.
