I am using ubuntustudio8.10 and have been missing the font viewer from
previous versions of ubuntu.

After reading the above I copied gnome-font-viewer and gnome-thumbnail-
font to my /usr/bin directory (as root using sudo in a terminal). Then,
by right clicking on a font file and using Properties -> Open With ->
Add -> Use a custom command, and typing in "gnome-font-viewer" in the
box that appears, and finishing with a click on Add and closing the
dialogue box, a font file can now be viewed with a double-click.

Thumbnails still don't work though.
