same problen here with a toshiba laptop with P4 2.8 GHZ using the option
noapic solved the problem, but this has only appeared since intrepid
ibex.

The only other thing besides using no apic that lets the system continue
at a regular speed is when Ctrl or Alt or both are depressed after the
freeze..

In spirit of thoroughness i inform you that the problem MAY NOT be present in
the Testing and Unstable editions of Debian.
I say may because other issues came up (specifically with the boot loader)
which prevented me from having a complete boot.

I believe the Alpha5 image contains the 2.6.27-2 kernel which I've heard
has this issue you've reported. However, I've had confirmation that the
2.6.27-3 kernel resolves this. Would you be willing to test the latest
daily LiveCD which I believe should contain the newer 2.6.27-3

it is my sad duty to report you that the Daily Build (16 september 2008) of
Intrepid Ibex, DID NOT fix my problem.
I've yet to try with command-line options, but right now nothing changed.
The pattern of the error is the same.
