It looks to me like you've got a locally installed version of matplotlib that
is not allowing the package manager to properly install. If you have the
matplotlib package removed you shouldn't have any matplotlib directory in:
/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/

That indeed was the problem. After manually deleting the folders and then
removing and reinstalling 'python-matplotlib' with aptitude, the problem is
resolved.
