Ah, the old problem with disabling the card with some hardware switch. I
also have a broadcom card and don't ask me how much time I have wasted
with that (though there have also been some bugs in previous kernels)...

The output of the command 'dmesg' would be interesting. The output after
you have brought up your network card could show if your card was
properly installed. The output after an unsuccessful connect could give
further information.

I figured out what the problem was/is. It seems that the hardware and
software does not quite agree with one another. The radio can be
physically turned on, but not recognized, and vice-versa.
