this is using hardy updated from gutsy and feisty. I recently changed the graphics card from a gforce 7900gs to radeon 1600 pro pci-express and before that I upgraded to a MA790X-DS4 motherboard, phenom 9550 CPU from DFI lanparty NF4-ultra Socket 939 CPU. in both cases, before and after the change

We need some further details. Which Ubuntu release are you using? You said it started recently, what changed at this time? Are you using proposed updates? Did you recently change your graphics driver? Did you try this on multiple machines (since you mentioned both ATI and nvidia)? This is neither
