I am also affected by this issue. I use Kubuntu 8.10 with a 00:02.0 VGA
compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0c). However it doesn't bother me as much, as
it is a split-second garbled display that we talk about; it is barely
noticeable.
Ok, i think we have enough information. Lets wait and see if there is
someone else out there who is also affected by this issue, so that the
bug can be confirmed.

This is probably a display driver bug, so it has something to do with

Hi,
thanks for your attachments.
A few more questions:
1. Are you using Compiz-effects? You know those pretty 3d effects and wobbly
windows that require a good graphic card.
2. Is this happening even with desktop-effects turned off?
3. Are you using gnome (Ubuntu) or kde (Kubuntu) or both? Is
To answer your questions:
1) I was. In Hardy I had these and enjoy compiz alot. However, I read
in some reports that these caused certain conflicts. I originally
removed some of the packages while in KDE, rebooted and still had the
artifacts. When I booted to Gnome, I noted that I still had the

There is no file by that name there at this time.
I will log out of Gnome and see what KDE4 looks like now that all of
compiz has been removed.

After some incubation time, it seems that the system is stable as long
as compiz was removed and that desktop effects were disabled. As soon
as desktop effects are turned on, and the system is allowed to go into
screen saver mode, shortly afterward, the system freezes. Also the

I didn't see any .xsession-errors file in my home directory. Is it in
some folder?
- Yes, i think it should be there. But it is a hidden file because of
the dot in the filename. View Show Hidden Files in nautilus. If it
isn't there, i think we can live without it.

If it helps any, I get no visual ill-effects with I boot into the Gnome
side, but after a while of being idle, the system just locks up with no
response to the keyboard... I.e.ctrl-alt-del, ctl-alt-F1 don't have any
effect, only rebooting does.
I will get you the detail outputs when I reboot.
Just rebooted to KDE.
Yes the artifacts are still there, even tho compiz has been removed.
When I do disable the desktop effects, moving from one desktop to
another, is clean, and no video artifact occurs.
I will let this sit for a while to see if, the freezing occurs after it
