This is a very old bug and it looks to have been caused by not
restarting after update from reporters comments.

I beg to differ; yes, is an old issue, but still an issue.
After the last update I have update two more times and rebooted many more,
and still no fix for this problem, I did install from the official
repositories and not directly from Mozilla's web page.

Can you please try creating a new profile? Run thunderbird -P to start
the profile manager. Are you using IMAP with GMail?
