In Ubuntu, I think this issue would be classified as a "grave defect". This completely prevents pydoctor from working on Hardy. Why even have the package if it's entirely broken? Can someone at least apply the patch Johannes attached three months ago? If it helps at all, I tried it and it fixes

Since 'as' is a reserved word in Python 2.6, using it as a variable yields the above syntax error. The attached patch renames the variable to 'as_' (attaching a simple underscore as is common to resolve such conflicts). Patch is untested though (ran out of time).
