BTW, could someone tell us which file is it: package cache file is
user-friendly, but debug-useless...

Thanks for your bugreport.
This is most likely a duplicate of #257639 - packagekit is trying to
open the cache at the same time as synaptic/update-manager and that
causes the error. Its a race condition
This bug didn't happen until today, but the /var/log/dist-upgrade folder
is empty:
$ ls -la /var/log/dist-upgrade/
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-03-20 22:40 .
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2009-04-21 07:48 ..
$

works OK.
