Yeah, I don't have this problem anymore now that I'm using Maverick. I
guess it fixed itself...

I have the same problem... when I reboot, everything is typically (but
not always) muted. Sorry for the apport spam... I didn't expect it to
make so much noise!

Oh, I'm sorry... my problem is different; I can always unmute my sound using
the Gnome volume control UI.
It's just annoying that it doesn't load the saved volume levels correctly. I
doubt our problems are related after all.

Same problem here - I have to hit a Volume key to restore sound. (I'm
also posting to delay bug expiration until Lucid comes out)

I still have this problem. It appeared on my laptop when I upgraded to
9.10 two months ago.
Log output from 'user.log' (the first and last lines are repeated in 'messages'
and all lines except the first one is repeated in 'syslog'):
Dec 23 00:31:53 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: pid.c: Stale PID
I used to reset alsa with sudo alsa force-reload after each restart.
Mid of july, perhaps caused by updates, it began to work properly.

Ok. After playing around a while with alsa, I managed to make my
soundcard unusable. Now, on every restart the soundcard was muted and I
had no control on the volume, as stated above.
Now I followed this guide:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012
I found out, that sudo alsa
