Tried scim -f socket -d: Scim started, apparently, but Ctrl+Space key
for toggling the scim panel doesn't work; I can't actually input things.

This problem still exists in the latest packaging of scim-1.4.9 for
Ubuntu Karmic.
However, there is a workaround:
start scim with:
scim -f socket -d
This should work until they fix the problem.

the same error. Please do a grep scim /var/log/syslog after scim
