One more thing:
What do you use as screensaver? If you set Blank screen as
screensaver in gnome-screensaver-preferences, then the screen goes
black, regardless of which setting in gnome-power-preferences.

I uninstalled the screensaver ages ago, long before this problem began.
Another problem that started around the same time as this however is that
totem crashes the second I try to play anything with it. Mplayer still
works. Have no clue if it's related.

I've the same problem. Using Jaunty on an HP530c (p4-2.66). I upgraded
to Jaunty about a month ago yet this problem only just cropped up. It
happens any time the computer is left alone for a couple of minutes -
