This looks like a duplicate of Bug #430694. Try to change to console with alt +
f1, then stop your window manager through sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop.
Afterwards remove the module with sudo rmmod i915 and

what unggnu meant is switch to the terminal with ctrl + alt + f1
to stop / restart gdm, instead of using /etc/init.d, you can do:
sudo service gdm stop
sudo rmmod i915
sudo modprobe i915 modeset=1
sudo
I also have similar problem, it's a single core system, xorg processes
uses all the idle CPU and desktop is quite slow to respond. I've
upgraded from jaunty (to karmic beta, to be more accurate: the state of
ubuntu repositories at october 4) where I hadn't got this problem. I'm
using nvidia's

By the way, I am using gnome, and I don't run compiz (just plain
metacity), but it's a dual screen setup (see xorg.conf).

After login-logout the situation is bit better but still xorg uses
12-20% CPU even if there is nothing important on the screen just a
gnome-terminal with a top running inside it ...
