Jeremy,
I get the same bug with a totally fresh install of 9.10 on a brand new, self

Got exactly the same issue on a rather oldish Sony Vaio PCG-Z600 TEK.
I found the following workaround and successfully installed Linux Mint 8
LXDE Community Edition (which ist based on Ubuntu Karmic, so I guess
this also applies there):
The Laptop has got a pcmcia CD-ROM it can boot from, but
Hi Kevin,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains
I tried again with a new CD, and this doesn't happen anymore.
Note this still happens with the first CD, which was checked before and after
burning and works well on other laptops. Really strange...
The first CD was burned the day Karmic was released, and the second one a week
after.
Was there
Same problem here. Hardware is a Dell XPS M1530. Update from 9.04 to

OK, after having this issue with Alpha-6, Beta, and RC, I downloaded the
final version last night, and tried a new install.
SUCCESS!!!
Luca said he was having issues with final version, but it appears that
final version fixed my problem.

Same bug for me :
the screen fills up with stdin: error 0, and then : (initramfs)
Unable to find a medium containing a live file system
My laptop is an Acer TravelMate2355XC
Hardy, Intrepid and Jaunty were previously installed on it, without any
problem.

Karmic Koala Beta does not install
Same here, with the Karmic Beta AND Karmic RC.
Running a Compaq desktop, not a notebook. Tried different options, graphic
safe, noacpi, nolapic, acpi=off.
Same result for LiveCD and for Install Ubuntu directly.
Also created a USB installation with Jaunty, same result after booting this USB.
My screen reads just above the stdin: error 0 that original poster
mentions several blocks with:
/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found
/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found
/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sr1: No medium found
/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sr1: No
** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu)
