FIX:
open a GUI mixer (xfce4-mixer), switch to Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa)
(OSS Mixer) and pull up the volume
also this seems to be kind of duplicate of #349633

Tony, just to double-check some things: First, you are running Ubuntu
with a virtual machine of Windows (or the other way around?). Second,
have you tried installing the 'linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-
generic' package and rebooting? Lastly, I noticed that your ICE958
device is set as on
sound dies on my laptop while I'm listening to rhythmbox or a youtube
video using firefox. I reboot the application and then I get sound
again. I am using karmic. I only noticed this in the past few weeks. I
first installed karmic alpha 6 version and never had an issue with it
until a few weeks
mezquitale, while the symptoms are similar, your hardware is different
from the hardware that the original reporter has. Therefore, we would
like to keep these bug reports separate, at least for now. Lets
continue examining your problem in bug 486207.

No dual boot here. Just VirtualBox with Windows 7.
Anything in my BIOS I should look at?

I just installed Kubuntu fresh, still have the issue.
Headphones still work. If you need another apport or know a log that may
be relevant I can provide it.

On my Thinkpad X200 Tablet PC, the behaviour depends on the audio state
of windows.
When I shut windows down with audio silenced, then I will have audio on
the headphone jack only once I boot Ubuntu.
When I shut windows down with audio enabled, then I have audio on the
speakers in Ubuntu.
I am
I have just tried to boot in windows and unmute audio on my X200s -- it
then appeared in Ubuntu; on speakers and the headphones if they are
plugged in.
I'm running up to date Karmic Koala.

Tony, that is actually a very important observation. This indicates to
me that there might be something wrong with JackSense and might possibly
be stuck in Headphone mode even when the headphones are not in. I'll
have Dan take another look at your bug report.

Ok, just to summarize what you have already done in a previous bug report.
Please correct if any of this is wrong:
checked alsamixer settings.
tried muting the IEC958 device
installed 'linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic'
Have you checked for the slmodemd daemon to see if it is running?
@WeatherGod: Did not have slmodem installed. Should I?
Checked alsamixer. We're good.
Try muting IEC958 (No affect)
Tried installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic.
[02:54 pm][t...@t400 ~]$ sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*
[sudo] password for tony:
The reason I ask about slmodem is because it has been known to cause
conflicts. Just to be absolutely sure, run the command 'killall
slmodemd'
Then try playing something.
If that still doesn't solve the problem, let's see what is the output of the
following:
cat /proc/asound/cards | grep
No process found with that name
[03:26 pm][t...@t400 ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards | grep ICE1712
[03:26 pm][t...@t400 ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfc22 irq 32
(the grep ICE1712 returned nothing)
On Fri, Nov 13,
Headphones work, though!
