I did a clean install of Karmic and was unable to replicate your issue.
Could you provide some more detail to your specific situation? It
appears as though you might be trying to build from source?

Yes I was building from source using Linux Mint 32-bit (same as jaunty)
on a fresh install. I followed the instructions from the main gnome
site. Compiled with jhbuild as instructed.
