Stefan K., HAL is deprecated, the replacement is UDEV and the UDEV
script to automatically set up printers is in the system-config-printer-
udev package.

Thats strange... solved this issue by installing libcupsys2 from _debian_
package:
# dpkg -i libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu3.4_all.deb
then just installed .deb's for drivers and it works ok. what's the catch?..

Confirmed for me too, on karmic kubuntu (dist-upgraded from 9.04, where
I'd previously got the Canon MP600 USB working using instructions from

I can confirm this problem and that the fix works for an ancient
parallel port Canon LBP4sx that is connected via a USB/parallel port
adaptor.
