Ah, nuts...It couldn't be that easy! The DELL inspiron 1520 I am using has an external wi-fi catcher switch with three positions. 0=Off, I=On, =scan for wireless networks. I assumed the neutral poisiton was 'On', but the wifi actually works in Ubuntu set to 'Off'. to check for this status on

I think this bug has a workaround in Bug 441161 but I am too much of a newby to understand the instructions. which part is terminal code and which just information? How do I check that solution applies? I seem to have module b44 but my wireless was only disabled after update. -- wireless

Steps taken tonight to reproduce problem. 1. Instal Ubuntu 9.10 2. Check wireless is working 3. System/Administration/Update manager click 'Instal Updates' (There are 166 of them) 4. Restart Required - wireless disabled on restart. -- wireless disabled in 9.10 upgrade
