This is not going to work. inputattach is a separate source package in
Ubuntu.

The inputattach source in the Debian package is newer than that in
Ubuntu's separate source package; it also includes patches fixing bugs
filed against Ubuntu's inputattach. Wouldn't it be possible to replace
both Ubuntu sources (joystick and inputattach) with the Debian joystick
source package?

Well debian's inputattach is patched so it's fresher then Ubuntu's.
Currently it looks like inputattach is in main and this will bring in
binary joysticks package and binary calibration tests package into main
as well. In total all debs build from Debian
