well, I installed linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-19-generic as WeatherGod
and I discussed using synaptic, but with no change to my low powered sound.

sound from headphones, and limited sound with a pair of external speakers
Please revert your default.pa changes and use linux-alsa-driver-modules
from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev.

After some on-site work, we have determined that sound is indeed
working, however it is *extremely* faint. We will now follow the
directions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats#Volume%20range%20anomalies
to see if this helps to make the audio loud enough.
