Jockey-gtk says that the driver is activated but it is not installed. As
I said before, it claims also claims that the driver is installed when
using the live cd.

Nvidia driver activated but not
since jockey version 0.5.8-0ubuntu7 both available NVidia drivers
(current and 173) are activated, but not in use. I have never installed
any NVidia driver. (it shows the same when running the live cd). The
only way to activate the driver is to remove both drivers (in jockey-
gtk) and activate the
confirm the issue (HP 8730w). Lucid beta2. This problem did not happen
in alpha1, x11 was broken on alpha2, it did not happen on beta1 now
shows-up on beta2... Remove both drivers, then activate current, then
reboot... to have it fixed. Seems very hard to get rid of the NOUVEAU
stuff.

I upgraded from 10.04 beta2 to 10.04 beta2, found that compiz did not
work well, check with nVidia driver, got the message:
current recommended version is stated as activated but currently not
in use

Yep, it's working here too. I find it a bit un-informational that the
driver is listed as (version current) and not (version 195.36) or
whatever, but that's another story...

Some tweaks and comments:
first i've uninstalled some packages: plymouth-x11, most of themes,
nouveau and nvidia-current, then reboot.
Of course booting fail to command line, no surprise indeed. Then
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure udev
- sudo jockey-text -l : found nvidia_173 nvidia_current
first
confirm with Lucid B1 updated: nvidia-current 195.36.15-0ubuntu1
installed:
nvidia-common
nvidia-current-modaliases
