Geoffrey P., thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images

Upon upgrade to 10.04 from 9.10 (not fresh install) the XOrg failed to
start initially. Once I worked through that hiccup, the resolution will
not go above 1024 x 768. This worked without a hitch in 9.10 and had the

This *is* indeed a modesetting issue. It even works with the stock
Ubuntu-21 kernel.
Boot option flag to nomodeset is a work-around to the issue.
My conjecture: The card is attempting to be set outside of the
displayable range (perhaps on a much higher resolution monitor this

Oh, and I did test the vanilla upstream kernel--same results.

Also, I wasn't sure what status this bug report should be in. So, my
apologies for making a mess of the report with the changes.

Hi Geoffrey,
If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the

Appears to be a modesetting issue, this is now being handled by the
kernel so reassigning to linux.
As a workaround, you could try disabling KMS - boot with
radeon.modeset=0, which should restore karmic-level functionality by
using the old X user modesetting stuff.
