I have the same issue with my HP tm 2000 with nivida 6150
This is what I found:
You will get this behavior if you upgrade the nvidia driver either from ubuntu
restricted drivers or by downloading the latest driver from nvidia.

Hello!
I have amd64 Ubuntu 10.04 running on my
Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion tx1000 Notebook PC
while it on battery power after loading splashscreen monitor turns
black. And i should for examlpe reopen the display, or press Ctrl+Alt+F1
Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get it back.
Also when i press Ctrl+Alt+F1

I should add a couple more things.
I initially assumed that it might have something to do with the
processor running slower while in battery power and something not being
detected or run in time, so the default going to text mode. However, the
behavior was unchanged when I changed BIOS settings
