hostname -f gives me the FQDN properly, so it's not a consistent problem. I've seen similar things before when there are incorrect entries in the /etc/hosts file. My suggestion is to check your /etc/hosts file and ensure it's setup as follows: [internet address] [domain name] [alias] eg:

Quite right. The entry that it creates during installation for 127.0.1.1 ubuntu was confusing the issue. Fixing that line to include the FQDN or removing the line entirely resolves the issue. I'll go see if I can figure out why that line is being added during installation...I'm sure there's a
