The following worked for me. I am on 12.04 LTS.
1. If you have texlive-publishers installed, remove it. (This step is
necessary as otherwise it won't let you do step 3).
2. Follow the steps in this link:

3. Get and install the
Still present in Ubuntu 12.04 due to the antiquated texlive 2009 it
uses.
Workaround: Install the backported texlive 2012 from 12.10.

I also have this problem. Worse - for some reason once in a while
(probably during some system update) the natbib is reverted to the older
LTS version and I have to reinstall it.
Quite annoying.

Hasn't been fixed for a year yet. I had to manually update both
revtex4-1 to its latest version to get affiliations to work properly AND
natbib to compile a paper. A LTS version should not have this problems
for so long. Having to manually update latex packages is quite

Title:
Natbib version not compatible with revtex4-1 from texlive-publishers
Many journals (aps and aip), are requiring the use of revtex4.1, buggy

One workaround is to install texlive-publishers version 2009-9 from
Debian Unstable - this package now contains revtex4 in addition to
revtex 4.1. Apparently revtex 4.1 is buggy anyway, see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=561836.

I agree. This needs to be fixed.

Well, of course you can fix this by manually downloading and installing the
latest natbib version into a texmf tree of your choice (system-wide or
user-based).
But still it remains a bug in ubuntu - there should be no version conflicts in
the packages of a LTS version. The fix would certainly
