I just setup my LDAP on my Ubuntu server, and I could only
/etc/init.d/slapd start I could not stop slapd using
/etc/init.d/slapd stop. It give me Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.. I only
could use kill -9 PID
I have try changes the users and group of the related file, still
cannot. I am not using

It seems it has been fixed in feisty. Thanks! Though I've fixed the
'stop-as-user' problem (cannot store pidfile when running slapd as a
user) in edgy, it would be nice to backport the fix, or I've missed it
and it's done there too?

Ok, i can reproduce it on my Dapper. It is still the same on Edgy.
Your changes seem quite logical for me. Note that changing the user that
run slapd is not trivial (have to modify the owner of /var/lib/ldap and
/etc/ldap/slapd.conf).

Here is the slapd.init patch for correcting LGB bug. It only concerns
ubuntu changes (/var/run on tmpfs) so there is no reason for this to go
to Debian.
More changes (changing owner of /etc/ldap/slapd.conf and /var/lib/ldap)
should go to Debian if we want them.

Also please note that some softwares _refuses_ to work as root or at
least it's not default. Since running slapd as root hasn't got any
advantage (OK, binding to ports below 1024 requires root priv in UNIX,
but sure, slapd can drop its privs as soon as possible), I think the
default should be run
