This system is now working as well as it did on 9.04, which is not very
well.
Scrolling is broken. If I bring up a window that can be scrolled, and I
scroll, only the newly displayed part of the scrolling window is
updated, the stuff that should be shifted up or down remains unaffected.
If I play
I did as you asked. (took me a while to figure out that "Xorg
-configure" needed a sudo and that it put the new xorg.conf.new in my
home directory).
Anyway, with the new xorg.conf, the system no longer reboots when I
attempt to do a graphical login, instead it hangs with a dead keyboard
and no mou

Thanks for being patient with this bug. You can create a default-ish
xorg.conf using "Xorg -configure". Use "sudo service gdm stop" from a VT
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) to shutdown the current X or else the command will fail.

I attempted to do what you asked, but I'm not sure I succeeded.
There was no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.
I created one with the following contents:

Option "AIGLX" "false"

(that indenting was done with a tab, but I was unable to use tabs in
