I still have the problem with apt when trying to install from a USB
drive on the 11.04 daily build for x386 (not 64 bit). It copies all the
files over then apt stats and cannot detect the CDROM.

Upstream claims this problem was fixed in cdrom-detect, so the remaining
issue may be the 7-zip long file name problem that is described in Bug
234185 (i.e., you may not be able to certain utilities, such as
UNetbootin). Rob, which burning utilities have you tried?

You received this bug
The cdrom-detect/try-usb=true functionality differs on different USB
drivers. On my Kingston DATATraveler 1 GB it does not work at all, but
on a Dane Elec 4 GB device it hangs later in the process (Failed loading
installer components from CD).
I'am trying this on an INTEL D510MO installing Ubuntu
11.04 fixes the issues in at least the the daily server x86_64 builds. I
now only have a bug with booting afterwards, but this could be bios
related and is an entirely diffrent bug

Ubuntu Server 10.10 release final still has the bug. cdrom-detect/try-
usb=true suggested work around does not work with both Ubuntu USB-
Creator Unetbootin.
Tried on various machines both i386 and AMD64

According to Bug 234185, this has been resolved for the 10.10 Release
candidate _alternate_ CD (per Bug ), but I just confirmed that the
problem still exists on the Ubuntu Server RC daily from Oct 5th.
cdrom-detect/try-usb=true seems to work around it.

Exact same problem here, with both Ubuntu USB-Creator Unetbootin
Work-around found by adding cdrom-detect/try-usb=true in Unetbootin
