I think it's because the game cannot find enough non-empty directories
under your home directory.
You can try to create some more directories or use the -safemode command
switch from console (it will use the /tmp dir instead of your home)

Thanks smazzux, that works. There should be a warning at least saying
that it would fail without at least four non-empty directories within
the user's home directory, either on the package description or a pop-up
in the game itself. The error would likely happen on clean
installations of Ubuntu

Just installed viruskiller to test this, and I couldn't reproduce. Please try
this:
strace -e trace=file -o viruskiller.debug viruskiller
and attach the viruskiller.debug file
