I had the same error, so based on comments here I viewed the end of the

I got this error message from the update manager when trying to upgrade

I have the same bug. I tried all the trikcs here proposed but the problem
still remain.

My addition: trying a respin of Ubuntu 10.04 on a blank x86_64 system.
The same error comes shortly after installing the system and
removing/adding a few packages. Reinstall of xorg-server-video-all and
xorg-server-input-all does not help. Thus the problem seems to have
deeper roots in the past
To be continued: apparently my particular problem came from switching to
maverick repository and upgrading some packages to 10.10 versions.
Disabling it a temporal solution.

Hi Atanas Atanasov. What about if your install package ubuntu-desktop?
I had same problem, looking at main.log revealed that ubuntu-desktop
package was not installed, what caused dependencies being broken.
After installing ubuntu-desktop, release upgrade was OK.

I have managed to overcome this problem by uninstalling xorg-server-
