Ah, I'm sorry. The problem is that mutt up to 1.5.15 did _not_ support
SMTP, and thus needed a local MTA to send eMails. I hope this will be
resolved when the next stable release of mutt comes out.

I personally use Mutt ONLY for reading mailspools created with tools
like OfflineIMAP, and for debugging issues with buggy IMAP and POP3
servers, and hence don't understand why I should be forced to install
and manage an MTA that I have no intention of using. The MTA aspect
should be a Recommends,
It sends mails via SMTP so it doesn't depend on any local mta. Just
remove the dependency!

Ulf's statement is only true for the very most recent version of the
mutt package in Gutsy (which, N.B., tracks mutt's development tarballs,
not their stable releases), mutt-1.5.15+20070412. According to the
website, it's fairly experimental. Still, perhaps we should now
downgrade it from a
mutt works as an IMAP and POP3 client, with no local spool. Its
relationship to the (inherently local) mail-transport-agent virtual
package should be Recommends at the strongest.

Mutt requires an MTA (such as the mail command) to send outgoing mail,
which it does not handle on its own; thus the dependency. It doesn't
need a full-blown MTA (that provides queueing and such), just something
to use in sending mail. The reality is that it needs something to
complete its status

Dependency on postfix is not forced. mutt depends on postfix | mail-
transport-agent, if you do not have a package that provides mail-
transport-agent, postfix is installed.
I would reject this bug on mutt and add a bug on msmtp requiring that
this package provides mail-transport-agent.
